Present. Tense.
Curator: Michael Mazzeo
Opening Reception: Friday, October 3, 5PM
Open weekends through November 9, 1- 4PM
Curator’s Statement:
Present Tense, read as a grammatical term, refers to actions or states occurring now, habitually, or as general truths. Yet when these words are read individually – present and tense – they invite deeper contemplation, reinterpretation, and expression.
Recent national and global events have brought to the surface the deepening fractures in our social fabric. The quote, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention,” widely attributed to Heather Heyer—who was killed during the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia—serves as a call to awareness and action. As citizens and artists, we are both witnesses and participants—not only in our local and personal spheres but also within wider regional, national, and global contexts. We carry the responsibility to respond to injustice, to challenge systems of oppression, and to speak truth to power.
