Curated by Danielle Scott
“In our interior experience as individuals, as in the public forum of our shared experience as a culture, our courage lives in the same room as our fear — it is in troubled times, in despairing times, that we find out who we are and what we are capable of.”
The great poet, essayist, feminist, and civil rights champion Audre Lorde (February 18, 1934–November 17, 1992)
And indeed, these are troubled, despairing times. We have lived for the past four years with a president whose Modus Operandi is fear and division. We also have a pandemic that is currently raging out of control that disproportionately affects those with financial insecurities or pre-existing conditions. Americans are going hungry. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many people of color have been a wake-up call. We have taken to the streets to show our discontent with the systematic racism prevalent in our society.
How have you responded to the stress of our current situation? What has changed inside you? How do you go about your day when all these forces are mobilizing? How do we keep ourselves and our loved ones safe? Simple decisions have become existential decisions.
