Artist Statement
I create to process change.
My work explores transformation—personal, cultural, and emotional—through layered storytelling across comics, animation, music, and design. It’s my way of turning pain, growth, and resilience into something others can connect with—especially young people navigating their identity, purpose, and political place.
My artistic practice fuses traditional draftsmanship with modern digital tools to craft immersive experiences that resonate across formats. Whether it’s a mural in Jersey City, a motion comic soundtrack, or an emotionally raw character arc, I’m always looking for the most direct way to make people feel—and then reflect. At the heart of it all is a simple question I ask myself and my audience: “What do you believe in enough to fight for?”
BIO
Cheyne Ali Anderson is a Jersey City-born comic book creator, multimedia artist, and storyteller best known for his deeply personal graphic novel series, The Changers. Cheyne began developing The Changers at age seven as both an escape from childhood trauma and a lifeline during years of emotional turmoil. Over 15 years, he transformed it from handmade comics into a fully realized series blending cosmic action, raw vulnerability, and the gritty realities of urban life.
Drawing inspiration from his own upbringing in Jersey City, Cheyne’s work explores themes of identity, purpose, and transformation through a diverse cast of teenage vigilantes navigating a city mutating under a mysterious cosmic force. His art fuses illustration, animation, music, writing, and design into one cohesive vision—each page a visual testimony to survival and growth.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Cheyne has produced webcomics, motion comics, and original music for The Changers, while also creating work that examines themes of self-worth, trauma, and cultural identity. His achievements include multiple community art projects, original animated shorts, and features at events like the Jersey City Black Comic Con. His recent launch of The Changers: Volume 1 marks both a milestone in his artistic journey and a powerful contribution to Jersey City’s creative legacy.
For Cheyne, art isn’t just a career—it’s a conversation with his past and his future.
