In a studio visit in the Paulus Hook section of Jersey City, Stefania Panepinto owner of Panepinto Galleries engaged in a conversation with the abstract expressionist mix media artist Candy Le Sueur – touching on life in South Africa, work inspiration, overcoming challenges, and dedication to studio practice. Candy Le Sueur pushes past boundaries to give new dialogue on the eternal imagery from the natural world.

SP: Explain a little bit about your background. What is your motivation to paint?
CLS: My husband and I moved to downtown Jersey City about twelve years ago from South Africa, which was a much different experience from where we are today. We journeyed from the beach city of Cape Town to the vibrancy of urban life in the New York City area.

My art studio is my home, facing the Statue of Liberty and has wonderful natural light.
Whether the sun is shining or cast by a sea of clouds, the exploration of the wonder of nature is my motivation to paint. It reminds me of when I first began painting landscapes, the reflections of the boundless blue skies that are so typically of South African.

At that time, I had a career in advertising and was only able to paint when I could. This made it very difficult to fully engage in my imagination and lose myself in my art, unlike now, where I draw upon many hours in the creative process.  My decision to work full-time has crafted a new form to my expression.
