Carol Schwartz

I am a born and bred Brooklyn girl, growing up in the Gravesend section of Flatbush. At that time, extended family was the order of the day and girls were supposed to either study to be a teacher or get married. I wanted to draw, paint and build. I worked hard, fulfilling the first step in my lifelong goal of being an artist, by winning a full 4-year scholarship to Pratt Institute. After graduating and a wedding, we took a long hiatus and lived in London and San Francisco where I continued my studies and worked on the signage design of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).

Returning to New York, I studied (again on scholarship) at the Art Student’s League where I won many awards. Though I loved painting and drawing, I realized I really loved working in 3 dimensions: sculpting. A recipient of the New Jersey Foundation on the Arts Fellowship, my work has been shown at the Lowe Galleries in Atlanta and Santa Monica, the Noyes Museum in New Jersey, the Florida State University Museum in Tallahassee and the Ceres Gallery in New York City where I won 1st prize in sculpture.
